The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) role was originally pioneered by Palantir Technologies to bridge the gap between complex data platforms and high-stakes client operations. Today, as enterprise AI deployment accelerates, companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks, Scale AI, and Glean are hiring FDEs aggressively.
Unlike traditional Solutions Engineers or Pre-Sales Consultants who present slides, an FDE is a hands-on production engineer embedded directly inside client environments. They write production code, design data pipelines, containerize microservices, build multi-agent workflows, and present live system architectures to C-suite executives.
